Jacobus Adriaan (Kobus) du Pisani is Professor of History in the School for Social and Government Studies at the North-West University of Potchefstroom, South Africa. He was visiting professor at the Hankuk University for Foreign Studies in Seoul, South Korea, and has been involved in academic exchange programmes with other institutions in several African, European and Asian countries. In the field of environmental history Prof. du Pisani has done research on the evolution of the concept of sustainable development, the history of environmental management in South Africa (particularly the practice of Social Impact Assessment), the process and impacts of desertification in southern African desert margin regions, and the development of cultural heritage plans as part of environmental management in rural areas. He has written books, chapters in books, and many articles published in academic journals of South Africa, Korea, the UK, the USA and Australia. He has served on the editorial boards of a number of academic journals.
