Michael Grodzinski is professor of landscape ecology at the faculty for Geography, National University of Kiev, Ukraine. He was born in Kiev and received in 1983 his PhD in Physical Geography at the Institute for Geography, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Kiev. In 1994 after defending his second (Doctoral) dissertation he was appointed as a Professor and Head of the department for Physical Geography and Geoecology of the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kiev. His research interests cover landscape ecology, landscape perception, landscape planning and sustainable development issues, particularly modelling spatial changes of landscapes under the natural disturbances and human impacts. He has held Fulbright award (USA), Royal Society (UK), Woodrow Wilson Center (USA) research grants, participated as an expert and team leader in several European projects. He is the President of the Ukrainian Association for Landscape Ecology, member of the National Committee of Ukraine of UNESCO program “Men & Biosphere”, member of the Commission for Landscape Analysis of the International Geographical Union. He published over 150 articles in scientific journals. Recent book publications include Understanding a Landscape: Place and Space (in two volumes, 2005), Aesthetics of Landscape (2006), Landscape Ecology (2007), Principles of Landscape Studies (2008), Niches of Landscapes in Multidimensional Spaces (2008).
