Poul Holm is Professor of Environmental History and Academic Director of the humanities research centre at Trinity College Dublin. He was President of the European Society for Environmental History in 2005-7. He has served as chairman of the Danish Research Council for the Humanities and was a member of the Standing Committee for the Humanities at the European Science Foundation. His career began as a curator at the Danish Fisheries and Maritime Museum in Esbjerg, and he has held chairs in the universities of Southern Denmark and Roskilde and was the Rector of Roskilde. He has published a history of early modern coastal culture of Scandinavia and books on Danish maritime urban and business history. He is chair of the research project History of Marine Animal Populations and a member of the Scientific Steering Committee for the Census of Marine Life. He founded a research training school devoted to training a new generation of historians and marine scientists to promote the study of global marine environmental history. His current research interest are the environments of maritime communities of Northern Europe.
