Currently Director, from 2002, of the Institute of Studies on Mediterranean Societies (ISSM) in Naples of the Italian National Research Council (CNR) and Full Prof. of Economic History and Economics in the University “Magna Graecia” in Catanzaro.
President from December 2001 of the European Graduate School for Training in Economic and Social historical Research (ESTER) in Nijmegen; later Rotterdam; later Groningen.
Winner of the Capalbio Prize for Economic History (2005).
Member of the Advisory Board of the Posthumus Centre from 1997. Member of the Scientific Committee of the Italian Society of Demographic History (SIDES) from 2003.

1969-1973 Student in Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa and University of Pisa. 1973-1994 Researcher and Associate Prof. of Economic History in the University of Pisa.
1994-2002 Full prof. of Economic History and Economics in the University “Magna Graecia” in Catanzaro.
